Very Rare 1984 Seagate Hard Drive Clock, Vintage. [001-051711-3]

$229.00 $199.00

  • A very rare and original 1984 Seagate 8" hard drive recycled as a clock.

  • Known as "Old reliable." The ST-225 was undoubtedly the best-selling hard drive of all time. the ST-225 was the single most common 20MB drive, and certainly the longest lived.

  • Of the thousands of hard drives we have reclaimed and recycled, this is the only one of this type and vintage that we have ever seen.

  • These drives were used in the earliest "mini and micro" computers of the day. The disk platter is a very early 5.25" platter that could hold only about 10 megabytes of data.  The drive had 2 disk platters combined to hold 20 megabytes of data.

  • We have seen vintage ads showing this type of drive selling for $3,695 in the day!  That's $369 per megabyte. Compare that to today's prices of about $.08 per megabyte (1 terabyte drive=1000 megabytes for about $80.)

  • One of the attached pictures shows this drive compared to a current desktop computer's 3.5" drive.

  • Clock dial is the actual ferrite coated disk platter from this vintage hard drive. Age has not affected the disk platter in any way, it is pristine and quite stunning.

  • Black metal hour and minute clock hands tell the time, the second hand is brass.

  • The "read-write head" is still attached with all of its workings.

  • The base was a hard drive's former cover left in its original condition with labels. (Minor signs of age and usage.)

  • Accenting the base is the disk spindle motor cover, the disk's spindle as well as the ribbon cable that was connected to its controller circuit board.

  • Artist signed and numbered "Certificate of Authenticity."

  • Approx. 5.5" wide by 8" tall.

  • "This clock was fashioned from a mid-1980s PC's hard drive, already very difficult to find. Unfortunately most of them are already in landfills...we were too late!" -- R. Connolly, TEcoArt
